Quick facts

Day by day

Day 1 – Welcome to Småland

The journey begins at the southern end of Lake Vättern. You check in at the classic Grand Hotel in the heart of Jönköping. Take the opportunity to discover the city where the safety match was once invented, stroll along the cozy promenades or enjoy an evening walk on the shores of Lake Vättern before dinner at the hotel.
If you have rented bicycles via Swike, they will be delivered directly to the hotel – ready for your upcoming adventure.

Day 2 – Towards the forests of John Bauer

The first day of cycling is a little calmer so that you can land in the adventure. You cycle through the dramatic East Vättern Scarp Landscape and on into John Bauer’s fabulous forests. Those who wish can choose a longer route, but we recommend a soft start to get to know the bike and nature.
The destination is picturesque Bunn and Bauergården, where you stay for two nights. Breakfast, packed lunch and dinner are included – as well as bike storage, sauna and bathing jetty.

Distance: about 50 km

Day 3 – Apple valleys and gravel roads

Today you choose between two routes, about 65 or 90 km, both inspired by Grenna Gravel.

Shorter route: a fast-rolling tour over Småland country roads and dirt roads, with many lakes and bathing spots along the way.
In the evening, dinner and relaxation await at Bauergården.

Distance: About 65 km

Longer route: via Äppledalen and its vineyards and orchards, with a chance to stop for coffee in farm shops. You pass Gränna and make your way up the famous 20% hill before returning.

Distance: About 90 km

Day 4 – Kingdom of the Forests

After breakfast, you leave your luggage with us and cycle on with a light pack. Today’s tour, about 75 km and 900 meters of altitude, offers 75% gravel road through forests and open landscapes. Once at Hotel Ullinge, dinner, sauna and an evening dip in the lake await.

Distance: About 75 km

Day 5 – Skuruhatt and the charm of the wooden town

Shorter route: about 80% gravel road, passing lakes and small villages in the countryside. Eksjö can also be added here as a short detour.

Distance: About 65 km

Longer route: Here is the opportunity to make a detour to the spectacular gorge and viewpoint. You can also stop in the wooden town of Eksjö for a coffee break.

Distance: About 90 km

The evening ends at Ullinge with dinner and a good rest.

Day 6 – Up on the roof of Småland

Today’s 75 km leads you through deep forests and over southern Sweden’s highest point, Tomtabacken (377 m above sea level), where you can climb the viewing tower. You check in at Best Western Hotel Vrigstad, take an after bike in the relaxation room and round off with dinner.

Distance: About 75 km

Day 7 – The roads of the championships

From Vrigstad you can choose:

Shorter route: Winding, almost car-free gravel roads that offer a real cycling experience in Småland’s hinterland.

Distance: About 95 km

Tough challenge: Parts of the course from the Swedish Gravel Championships 2025. Here you are challenged to push the last out of your legs before the last day’s bike ride back to Jönköping.

Distance: About 135 km

Day 8 – Last journey through the forest

Last stage! We transport the luggage back while you cycle towards Jönköping. The adventure ends with a well-deserved dinner and overnight stay at the hotel. After breakfast the next morning, you check out – filled with memories of Småland’s fantastic gravel cycling.

Details

Eight days of cycling, nature and culture – this is our most comprehensive gravel adventure in Småland. The journey takes you through a landscape where fairy tales and reality meet: from the glittering shores of Lake Vättern and the city pulse of Jönköping, via John Bauer’s magical forests and Äppledalen’s rolling cultivations, to the small Småland villages and deep forests in the hinterland.

During the week you will cycle on some of Sweden’s best gravel roads – both winding, fast stretches and challenging slopes with views as a reward. Several of the routes follow classic races such as Grenna Gravel and the Swedish Gravel Championships, which makes the Experience extra special.

Accommodation is an equally important part of the journey. Each day, carefully selected hotels and inns await you, where you can enjoy dinners, saunas and local flavors. Luggage is transported for you, so you can cycle light and focus on the Experience.

This is an adventure for those who want to experience Småland for real – through forests, over hills and along lakes, on roads where few cars roll but where nature is most present. Whether you are looking for long challenging distances or shorter alternatives, each day offers new views and impressions.

When you return to Jönköping after eight days, you will not only have cycled over 600 kilometers of gravel and asphalt – you will also have gained a sense of the soul of Småland, a place where fairy tales, history and nature are woven together.
