Day 1 – Arrival in Norrqvarn and first encounter with the G\u00f6ta Canal<\/summary>\n

The journey begins at Norrqvarn, a place that feels built for tranquility. Here you’re just steps away from the shimmering waters of the canal where boats slowly glide by. Once you’ve checked in, you can sink in, feel your pulse slow down and get into the traveling mood. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you want to move your legs, we recommend the short trip to Sj\u00f6torp where the G\u00f6ta Canal meets Lake V\u00e4nern. This first round is like a taste of everything that awaits in the coming days. You pass locks, boats, small caf\u00e9s and look out over the large, open horizon of Lake V\u00e4nern. A perfect warm-up before the longer stages begin. <\/p>\n<\/details>\n\n

Day 2 – Canal magic, Lake Viken and historic Karlsborg<\/summary>\n

The second day lets you experience why the G\u00f6ta Canal was named Europe’s best cycling route. The first few miles run right next to the water. Sometimes you only hear birdsong, the sound of the canal and your own tires against the gravel. You’ll pass lock keepers’ houses, old oak trees and winding gravel roads that make Sweden feel like a storybook. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

At T\u00e5torp you meet Lake Viken. Here you leave the canal and follow quiet small roads along one of Sweden’s most shimmering lakes. The water is often mirror-like and the forest boasts on both sides. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Once in Karlsborg, Hotel Von Boij awaits with a delicious dinner. Before that, you can stroll in the harbor or visit Karlsborg’s mighty fortress. It was built as a protected place for Sweden’s gold reserve and government. One of Sweden’s largest defense facilities and an Experience in itself. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Day 3 – Forsvik’s power, Tiveden’s wilderness and Askersund’s small town charm<\/summary>\n

After breakfast you pedal towards Forsvik. Here is the canal’s oldest and highest lock, an impressive construction where the water rushes forward with a force that is felt in the body. It is one of the real highlights of the trip. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then you continue along roads that meander between lakes and magical forests. You’ll come close to Tiveden National Park, where nature offers old-growth forests, cliffs and crystal-clear lakes. We recommend a break at Vita Sand, a bathing area with such bright sand that you can easily believe that you have ended up at the Mediterranean. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In Askersund you check in at Garvareg\u00e5rden, a genuine and cultural-historical B&B. Rolf and his staff welcome you like old friends. In the evening, dinner awaits at a local restaurant and an evening walk in Askersund’s cozy harbor district. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Day 4 – The depths of the mine and the winds of Lake V\u00e4ttern – towards Motala<\/summary>\n

Today’s stage takes you first up in mountainous terrain. You cycle towards Zinkgruvan where mining has been going on since the mid-1800s. Here you will encounter part of Sweden’s industrial history and during the summer you can visit the small but fascinating museum. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

After Zinkgruvan, the journey goes downhill again. The speed increases, the forest opens up and the blue water of Lake V\u00e4ttern appears between the trees. It is one of the most enjoyable parts of the trip with curves, views and that wonderful feeling of freedom. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In Motala, you check in at Hotell Nostalgi, located right by the harbor. Here you feel the pulse of the canal again. Boats dock, people stroll along the quay and the whole area is filled with a summer feeling. Dinner is served at the hotel. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Day 5 – Locks, still waters and city pulse in Link\u00f6ping<\/summary>\n

Today it is the G\u00f6ta Canal that is in the center. You follow small roads near the water and pass idyllic places where time seems to have stood still. During the day you will reach Bergs locks, one of the most iconic places on the canal. Here you will find a caf\u00e9 and viewpoints where you can watch boats being hoisted up and down the impressive lock staircase. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

After the break, you continue towards Link\u00f6ping, a city where history and modern urban pulse meet. Here you stay centrally at the charming “Faulty Towers” hotel and enjoy a good dinner. If you want to discover the city, St\u00e5ng\u00e5n, the university district and quiet parks are all around the corner. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Day 6 – Boat trip across Aspl\u00e5ngen and last leg to S\u00f6derk\u00f6ping<\/summary>\n

The last day of the trip starts in Link\u00f6ping but soon you are back out in the open cultural landscape. You cycle towards Norsholm and then follow the G\u00f6ta Canal further, now with more and more archipelago feeling in the air. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

At Lake Aspl\u00e5ngen, a little extra adventure awaits. Here you take the small boat that transports cyclists across the lake. The trip is short but very charming and makes the journey unique. The boat is also part of the official trail. You have already received your ticket. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The last stretch towards S\u00f6derk\u00f6ping is lush and easy to cycle. In the picturesque small town you check in at S\u00f6derk\u00f6ping’s well where you can buy admission to their fine SPA. Many people choose to cycle the last few kilometers to Mem where the G\u00f6ta Canal meets the sea. It is a beautiful end to a long and memorable adventure. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Day 7 – Ending on the Baltic coast<\/summary>\n

After breakfast, you finish the trip. You have now cycled the entire G\u00f6ta Canal from Lake V\u00e4nern to the Baltic Sea and also rounded Lake V\u00e4ttern. It is a journey filled with culture, nature, history and a unique silence that stays with you for a long time. <\/p>\n<\/details>\n\n
